Why would anyone be a volunteer? For me it was a chance conversation with a friend who enthused about the members of the Thursday Club, which had me walking through the door the following week and still here nearly eighteen months later.
I first started volunteering at fourteen, and I'm still volunteering thirty five years later! The great thing about being a volunteer is that I can give something back, but it fits in around my family and work life. I have volunteered with older people, children and those with additional needs.
For me being a volunteer is about giving, but the rewards are huge. Knowing that the support and encouragement I've given someone has given them the opportunity to experience something new, or do something they can no longer do for themselves is better than anything. Some of the members might not socialise with anyone till we see them the next week, this makes me want to make their day even more special.
Being a Cornwater and Thursday Club volunteer is all about laughter, chatting, listening, sharing, fun and friends. But whatever you do you'll be making a difference to someone's day.
